The Sikkim Pollution Control Board has introduced a four‑category waste segregation system, making it mandatory for households and businesses across the state.
Gangtok, Sikkim – The state’s Pollution Control Board announced new regulations that require waste to be sorted into four distinct streams: biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous and residual. The directive, issued under the State Waste Management Rules, applies to all residential complexes, commercial establishments and public institutions.
The board has outlined a phased implementation schedule, beginning with a pilot in select districts before a statewide rollout by the end of the year. It also mandates that local bodies provide separate collection bins and conduct awareness campaigns to educate citizens on proper segregation.
Officials say the move aims to reduce landfill burden, increase recycling rates and curb environmental pollution in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Non‑compliance may attract penalties as per the board’s enforcement guidelines.
