The Sikkim Pollution Board announced a ban on disposing untreated waste into the state’s rivers and streams, aiming to protect water quality.
The Sikkim Pollution Board issued an order prohibiting the discharge of untreated waste into any water body across the state. The directive applies to industrial, municipal and commercial sources, mandating that all effluents be treated before release.
Officials said the move is part of a broader effort to safeguard Sikkim’s pristine rivers, which are vital for drinking water, agriculture and tourism. Non‑compliance will attract penalties as per the state’s environmental regulations.
The board urged local authorities and businesses to upgrade treatment facilities and adopt best practices for waste management. Monitoring mechanisms will be strengthened to ensure adherence to the ban.
