Education Minister Raju Basnet of Sikkim highlighted that computational mathematics can be used to predict landslides and weather-related risks, offering a new tool for disaster preparedness.

Sikkim Education Minister Raju Basnet told reporters that advanced computational mathematics can analyse terrain and climate data to anticipate landslides and severe weather events. He noted that the Himalayan state, prone to frequent landslides during monsoon, can benefit from such predictive models to issue timely warnings.

Basnet emphasized that integrating these algorithms into the state's disaster‑management framework could reduce loss of life and property. He urged academic institutions and technology partners to collaborate on developing localized forecasting tools.

The minister said the government is exploring pilot projects that combine satellite imagery, sensor networks and machine‑learning techniques to generate real‑time risk assessments across vulnerable districts.

If successful, the approach could set a precedent for other Indian states facing similar geophysical challenges, aligning with national goals of leveraging technology for resilience.

No specific timeline was provided, but Basnet assured that the initiative will be prioritized in the upcoming fiscal plan.
