Sikkim CM Launches NDRF’s Fourth ‘Shikhar’ Expedition to Scale Mount Jongsong

Sikkim’s Chief Minister P.S. Tamang officially flagged off the National Disaster Response Force’s fourth Shikhar mountaineering team, which will attempt to summit Mount Jongsong in the Himalayas.
The flag‑off ceremony was held in Sikkim with Chief Minister P.S. Tamang presiding over the launch of the National Disaster Response Force’s fourth Shikhar mountaineering expedition. Senior officials and media representatives witnessed the event as the team prepared for its high‑altitude mission.
The expedition, part of the NDRF’s Shikhar programme, is set to target Mount Jongsong, a prominent peak in the eastern Himalayas that straddles the border of India and China. This will be the fourth time the force has organised a dedicated climbing team for such an undertaking.
Team members, drawn from NDRF personnel trained in high‑altitude rescue and mountaineering, will aim to reach the summit while gathering valuable data on terrain and weather conditions. The mission is also intended to enhance the force’s capability to conduct disaster response operations in remote mountainous regions.
Authorities expect the climb to take several weeks, given the technical challenges posed by the steep slopes and unpredictable weather at elevations above 7,000 metres. Successful completion would reinforce India’s commitment to adventure sports and bolster preparedness for emergencies in the Himalayas.
