Maharashtra is confronting a severe drought as prolonged dry spells reduce water availability across the state.
Maharashtra is experiencing a pronounced drought after several months of below‑average rainfall, leaving reservoirs and rivers at low levels. The shortage of water is being felt in both urban and rural areas, where wells and community taps are running dry.
Farmers across the state report that the lack of moisture is hampering sowing and crop growth, heightening concerns about the upcoming harvest season. Without adequate irrigation, staple crops such as wheat and pulses are at risk, potentially affecting food supplies and farmer incomes.
State authorities have begun to mobilise drought‑relief measures, including the release of emergency water supplies, promotion of water‑saving irrigation techniques, and the distribution of financial assistance to affected agricultural households. Officials say continuous monitoring will guide further interventions as the dry spell persists.
