A team of researchers has identified a previously unknown scorpion species in the forests of Odisha, adding to the state's rich biodiversity.

Researchers from the Odisha Forest Department, in collaboration with the Zoological Survey of India, discovered a new scorpion species in the dense forests of the Kandhamal district during a field survey in early March.

The scorpion, which has not been documented in any scientific literature before, displays distinct morphological traits such as a unique tail spine arrangement and a darker carapace compared to known species in the region.

Experts believe the discovery highlights the ecological richness of Odisha's forest ecosystems and underscores the need for continued biological surveys in the area.

The team plans to conduct further studies on the species' venom properties and potential medical applications, while also recommending conservation measures to protect its habitat.
