A team of entomologists has documented fifteen previously unknown rove beetle species from forest habitats in Arunachal Pradesh, expanding the known biodiversity of the region.
Entomologists conducting field surveys in the eastern Himalayan state of Arunachal Pradesh have confirmed the existence of fifteen rove beetle species that were previously unknown to science. The specimens were collected from a range of forest types, from subtropical broadleaf stands to higher‑altitude temperate woods, during a systematic biodiversity assessment.
Rove beetles (family Staphylinidae) are among the most diverse insect groups, playing crucial roles in soil health, decomposition and pest control. The newly described species add to the already rich inventory of arthropods recorded in the region, underscoring Arunachal Pradesh's status as a biodiversity hotspot.
Researchers say the findings highlight the need for continued taxonomic work and habitat protection, as many forest areas remain under‑explored. Further studies are planned to assess the ecological functions of these beetles and to integrate the data into conservation strategies for the state's fragile ecosystems.
