The state of Goa is preparing to deploy robotic machines for coconut harvesting, marking a high‑tech shift in the traditional agricultural practice.
Goa's agricultural department has announced plans to introduce autonomous robots for the state's coconut harvest. The move aims to modernise a sector that relies heavily on manual labour and seasonal workers.
The robots, equipped with sensors and AI‑driven navigation, will be able to identify ripe coconuts, climb the trees and harvest them with minimal human intervention. Developers say the machines can operate year‑round, reducing the dependence on migrant labor during peak seasons.
Officials expect the technology to boost productivity, lower harvesting costs and improve safety for farm workers who currently face the risk of falls from tall trees. Pilot trials are slated to begin later this year on selected farms along the coastal belt.
If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for other states with large coconut plantations, signalling a broader shift towards mechanised agriculture in India.
