Road safety concerns persist in Porvorim despite new flyover

Porvorim, a rapidly expanding suburb of Goa's capital, recently inaugurated an overhead flyover intended to ease traffic congestion and improve commuter safety. The structure, spanning a busy junction, was expected to reduce accidents and streamline vehicle movement.
However, traffic police and municipal officials report that the anticipated safety benefits have not materialised. Drivers continue to navigate narrow lanes, inadequate signage and lingering bottlenecks, leading to a steady stream of minor collisions and near‑miss incidents.
In response, the local administration has pledged to conduct a comprehensive safety audit, upgrade road markings, and install additional traffic signals. Officials emphasise that the flyover alone cannot resolve systemic issues without coordinated enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
The situation underscores the broader challenge of matching infrastructure upgrades with effective road‑user education and enforcement in fast‑growing urban pockets of Goa.
