RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das cautioned that a stalled US‑India trade pact could hurt the Indian economy, but recent free‑trade agreements may soften any tariff impact.

In a recent statement, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das warned that the inability to finalise a trade agreement with the United States could have a negative impact on India’s economic outlook. He highlighted that such a delay may translate into higher tariff pressures on Indian exporters and could affect the balance of trade.

Das also pointed out that India’s portfolio of newly signed free‑trade agreements with other nations is positioned to cushion any adverse effects arising from a stalled US deal. These agreements are expected to provide alternative market access and mitigate potential tariff shocks.

The central bank’s remarks come as both countries continue negotiations on a bilateral trade framework, underscoring the importance of external trade dynamics for India’s monetary and growth strategies.
