The central government has named former naval officer Rajendra Arlekar as the new Governor of Tamil Nadu, succeeding the previous incumbent.
New Delhi announced that Rajendra Arlekar will take over as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, replacing the outgoing office‑holder. The appointment was made by the President of India on the advice of the Union Cabinet.
Arlekar, a former Indian Navy officer and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, previously served as the Governor of Goa and held several ministerial portfolios in the Union government. His extensive administrative experience is expected to aid the constitutional duties of the Tamil Nadu governorship.
The Governor’s role in the state includes overseeing the swearing‑in of the chief minister, ensuring the smooth functioning of the legislative assembly, and acting as a liaison between the state and the centre. Political analysts note that Arlekar’s appointment may strengthen the centre‑state coordination, especially ahead of upcoming state elections.
An oath‑taking ceremony is slated to be held in Chennai’s Raj Bhavan, where Arlekar will formally assume his responsibilities and meet senior state officials.
