The Rajasthan High Court issued strict directives to safeguard natural water bodies, drainage channels and rain‑water harvesting zones within the Prithviraj Nagar development in Ajmer.
The Rajasthan High Court has intervened in the Prithviraj Nagar urban development project in Ajmer, mandating the preservation of existing natural water bodies, drainage pathways and designated rain‑water harvesting zones. The court's order emphasizes that any construction activity must not encroach upon or degrade these water resources, which are critical for local groundwater recharge and flood mitigation.
The bench highlighted that unchecked urbanisation has previously led to the disappearance of small ponds and streams, exacerbating water scarcity in the region. Accordingly, developers are required to submit detailed plans showing how they will protect and, where possible, enhance these water assets before proceeding with any further construction.
Failure to comply with the directives could result in contempt proceedings and penalties. The ruling aligns with broader state efforts to conserve water in arid zones of Rajasthan, reinforcing the legal framework that balances development with environmental sustainability.
