The Rajasthan State Election Commission has turned down a voter‑education campaign proposed by civil‑society activists, even after a Supreme Court direction urging authorities to facilitate such initiatives.

The Rajasthan State Election Commission (SEC) has refused to approve a voter‑awareness programme put forward by a coalition of civil‑society activists. The proposal, aimed at increasing voter participation ahead of upcoming local elections, was submitted to the SEC for permission to conduct outreach activities across the state.

The decision comes despite a recent Supreme Court observation that election authorities should create an enabling environment for voter‑education initiatives. The apex court had urged state bodies to cooperate with NGOs and other groups seeking to inform citizens about their voting rights and the importance of turnout.

Activists expressed disappointment, saying the SEC’s rejection undermines efforts to strengthen democratic participation. The SEC, however, cited procedural concerns and the need to maintain a level playing field among political parties as reasons for its refusal. The episode highlights ongoing tensions between judicial guidance and state electoral administration in India’s democratic process.
