The Rajasthan government has sanctioned a budget of ₹790 crore to reconstruct deteriorated khals of the Indira Gandhi Canal in Bikaner, Shri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh, aiming to boost irrigation for local farmers.

The state cabinet of Rajasthan approved a fund of ₹790 crore under the first phase of the Indira Gandhi Canal project to rebuild the canal's khals in three north‑western districts. The allocation targets the districts of Bikaner, Shri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh, where the irrigation network has suffered from decades of wear and tear.

The khals, some of which are over 60 years old, have been identified as critical bottlenecks that limit water delivery to farms. By reconstructing these channels, the government expects a direct improvement in water availability for the region's predominantly agricultural economy.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise the Indira Gandhi Canal system, which remains a lifeline for arid zones of Rajasthan. Officials anticipate that the enhanced infrastructure will help stabilize crop yields and provide much‑needed relief to the farming community during the upcoming planting season.
