Rail connectivity drives sharp rise in tourist arrivals to Mizoram

Tourist arrivals in Mizoram have surged following the inauguration of new railway links, officials report.

Tourist inflow to Mizoram has risen sharply after the state was linked to the national rail network, the tourism department said. The increase is attributed to the newly operational railway line that connects the northeastern state with major cities across India.

The Bairabi‑Sairang railway section, part of the Northeast Frontier Railway project, was commissioned earlier this year, providing the first direct rail access to Mizoram. The line reduces travel time considerably compared with road journeys, making the region more accessible to domestic travellers.

State officials expect the improved connectivity to boost local businesses, especially in hospitality and transport, and to promote lesser‑known destinations such as Champhai, Hnahthial and the scenic hills around Aizawl. The tourism department plans to leverage the rail link in its promotional campaigns to attract more visitors during the upcoming peak season.
