A recent farm fire in Punjab has pushed the state's share of nationwide agricultural blazes to nearly 36%.
A fresh incident of a farm fire was reported in Punjab, raising the state's contribution to the country's total agricultural fires to almost 36 percent. The latest blaze was recorded in a wheat field near a village in the state's central region, and local officials confirmed that the fire was contained after several hours of firefighting effort.
Across India, farm fires have been on the rise during the post‑harvest season, with the Ministry of Agriculture estimating more than 1,200 incidents nationwide in the past month. Punjab, traditionally a major grain‑producing state, now accounts for the largest single share of these incidents, surpassing other major agricultural states.
State authorities have urged farmers to adopt safer residue‑management practices and have announced additional support for fire‑prevention equipment. The agriculture department also warned that repeated fires could exacerbate air‑quality problems and threaten crop yields if not curbed promptly.
