A man in Punjab died by ingesting poison after local leaders allegedly pressured him to apologise for questioning Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema about synthetic drug supply.
A 45‑year‑old man from Punjab was found dead after reportedly consuming poison on 12 September. According to his family, the man had raised a public query about the supply of synthetic drugs to the Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and was then pressured by local leaders to apologise for the question.
The family says the pressure led to the man’s decision to take his own life. Police have registered a case under the Indian Penal Code and arrested four individuals believed to be involved in the alleged coercion.
Opposition leaders in the state have called for a formal First Information Report (FIR) against Minister Cheema, alleging that the minister’s office was complicit in the intimidation. The case is now under investigation by the Punjab Police.
