Punjab High Court Pauses NRIs Seats in Medical Colleges, Registrar Says Will Follow Order

The Baba Farid University registrar said that allocation of NRIs quota seats in Punjab’s medical colleges will proceed only after the High Court’s pending order is resolved.
The Punjab government has halted admissions of non‑resident Indian (NRI) candidates in state‑run medical colleges following a petition that is currently before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The legal challenge concerns the allocation of seats reserved under the NRIs quota, which the court has ordered to be stayed until it delivers a final verdict.
According to the registrar of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, the authority responsible for overseeing medical education in the state, any further assignment of NRIs quota seats will be carried out only after the High Court’s order is finalized. The registrar emphasized that the university will comply strictly with the court’s directives and will not proceed with admissions until the matter is settled.
The suspension affects thousands of prospective NRIs who had applied for medical courses across Punjab’s colleges. Stakeholders, including student groups and private coaching centres, are awaiting clarification, while the university has assured that the regular merit‑based seats remain unaffected.
