President Droupadi Murmu signed off on the Uniform Civil Code bills passed by the legislatures of Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam, marking a significant step toward national legal uniformity.
President Droupadi Murmu signed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bills of Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam on Thursday, giving the final nod to legislation that seeks to replace personal laws based on religion with a single set of laws for all citizens. The bills, which had been passed by the respective state assemblies earlier this year, aim to standardise matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.
The UCC has been a long‑standing proposal in India, intended to promote equality and simplify legal processes. By approving the bills, President Murmu has taken a decisive step in moving the country closer to a unified legal framework, a move that could reduce legal disparities across states.
The three states had each adopted the UCC framework through a series of amendments to their personal law statutes. The President’s assent is now required for the bills to become law, after which they will be implemented by the respective state governments.
Legal experts note that while the UCC remains a contentious issue, the approval of these bills may encourage other states to consider similar reforms, potentially accelerating the nationwide adoption of a uniform civil code.
