President Murmu has given his assent to the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code bill, allowing the state to move forward with its implementation.
President Droupadi Murmu has formally approved the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, a decision that removes the final hurdle for the state to enact the legislation. The assent was granted in a ceremony held at the President’s office, marking a significant milestone for the bill’s proponents.
With the President’s nod, the bill can now be forwarded to the Gujarat Assembly for passage. Once enacted, it will establish a uniform set of civil laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of religion.
The approval reflects the central government’s support for the UCC initiative, which has been a long‑standing objective of the state’s legislative agenda. The bill is expected to streamline personal law matters such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance.
Legal experts anticipate that the implementation will require coordination between state and central authorities to ensure smooth transition of existing personal laws to the new framework.
