A police constable has been taken into custody after investigators found that he pledged gold ornaments and diverted cash that had been seized in a dowry‑related murder investigation.
Police officials announced that a constable was detained after a routine audit of evidence linked to a dowry‑related homicide revealed irregularities. The officer is accused of using gold jewellery seized from the case as collateral and of siphoning cash that had been confiscated during the investigation.
According to the supervising officer, the gold items were pledged without proper authorization, and the cash was diverted to personal accounts. The breach was uncovered when auditors cross‑checked inventory records with bank statements, prompting an internal inquiry.
The constable now faces charges of criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of evidence and violation of the Dowry Prohibition Act. A senior police spokesperson said the department is committed to swift disciplinary action and that the probe will continue to determine the full extent of the misconduct.
