The number of postgraduate medical seats in six government colleges of Himachal Pradesh has been increased by 320, including 91 new seats at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, and 57 at Tanda Medical College.

The Himachal Pradesh health department announced a significant expansion of postgraduate medical education across six government institutions. A total of 320 additional seats have been approved, aiming to address the shortage of specialist doctors in the state.

Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla will receive the largest boost, with 91 new postgraduate seats spanning various specialties. The increase is expected to enhance the college's capacity to train specialists and improve healthcare services in the capital region.

Tanda Medical College will also see a substantial rise, adding 57 seats to its postgraduate programmes. The remaining seats are distributed among the other four government medical colleges in the state, though exact numbers were not disclosed.

Officials said the augmentation aligns with the central government's push to expand medical education and meet the growing demand for qualified doctors in rural and urban areas of Himachal Pradesh.

The new seats are slated to be filled in the upcoming admission cycle, following the standard merit-based selection process overseen by the National Board of Examinations.
