Crude oil prices rose more than 2%, prompting varied changes in petrol and diesel rates across major Indian cities.
The latest data from market monitors shows that crude oil prices have jumped by just over two percent, a movement that is being reflected unevenly in retail fuel rates across the country. While some metros such as Mumbai and Delhi have recorded modest hikes of 2-3 rupees per litre for petrol, others like Chennai and Kolkata have seen sharper increases of up to five rupees.
Analysts attribute the disparity to regional tax structures, varying dealer margins, and the timing of price revisions by state governments. In states where the state excise duty is already high, the additional cost of crude is being passed on more directly to consumers, whereas regions with lower tax rates have absorbed part of the increase.
The price adjustments come at a time when the government is monitoring inflationary pressures from fuel costs. Consumer groups have warned that continued volatility in global oil markets could further strain household budgets, especially in tier‑2 and tier‑3 cities where public transport fares are also linked to fuel prices.
