The Bihar Consumer Commission imposed an Rs 85,000 penalty on Cinepolis and Coca‑Cola after a Patna cinema hall sold a Rs 20 packaged water bottle for Rs 50.

Patna's Consumer Commission has taken a strict stance against price gouging after discovering that a major cinema hall was selling a packaged water bottle, normally priced at Rs 20, , for Rs 50. The investigation found that the overpricing involved both the cinema operator, Cinepolis, and the beverage supplier, Coca‑Cola.

Under the Consumer Protection Act, the commission levied a fine of Rs 85,000 on the two entities, citing violation of fair‑price norms and consumer rights. The penalty aims to deter similar practices in other entertainment venues across the state.

The commission also directed the cinema hall to display correct pricing information prominently and to refund the excess amount to affected customers. Authorities said they will monitor compliance closely to ensure that consumers are not subjected to arbitrary price hikes.

This action underscores the growing vigilance of state consumer bodies in curbing exploitative pricing, especially in high‑traffic public places like multiplexes.
