The administration in Papum Pare, Arunachal Pradesh, has stepped up its anti‑drug operations following a recent NCORD review that emphasized preventive measures.
Papum Pare district officials announced an expanded anti‑drug campaign on Monday, deploying additional police teams and community volunteers to monitor hotspots known for narcotics distribution. The operation includes random checks at transport hubs, intensified surveillance of known drug‑peddling zones, and awareness drives in schools and villages.
The move comes after the National Council for Operational Research on Drugs (NCORD) released a review highlighting gaps in preventive strategies across the Northeast. The council urged state and district authorities to adopt a proactive stance, focusing on early detection, community involvement, and rehabilitation support for users.
Local police chief Subhash Sharma said the intensified drive aims to curb the rising incidence of substance abuse among youth, noting that coordinated efforts with health agencies will ensure that addicts receive counseling and treatment rather than solely punitive action.
Authorities have also set up a helpline for residents to report suspicious activities anonymously. The district administration plans to evaluate the impact of the drive over the next three months and will publish a progress report to the state government.
