A government panel has concluded that faulty water pipelines and long‑standing municipal failures led to a series of deaths in Indore caused by contaminated drinking water.

A high‑level investigative panel appointed by the Madhya Pradesh government has released its report on the recent wave of water‑related deaths in Indore. The committee traced the cause to aging and poorly maintained water pipelines that allowed contaminants to enter the municipal supply, exposing residents to toxic levels of pollutants.

The panel’s findings point to a systemic failure spanning decades, with successive municipal administrations overlooking routine maintenance, leak detection and water‑quality testing. While the exact number of fatalities was not disclosed, the report confirms that multiple families lost members after consuming the tainted water.

In response, the panel has recommended immediate replacement of the identified faulty sections, installation of real‑time monitoring devices, and a comprehensive audit of the city's water‑distribution network. It also urged the Indore Municipal Corporation to allocate dedicated funds for infrastructure upgrades and to establish a transparent public‑information portal on water safety.

The municipal authorities have acknowledged the report and pledged to act on the recommendations, stating that a detailed action plan will be submitted to the state government within the next fortnight.
