Stubble burning in Pakistan’s Punjab province is contributing to worsening air quality in Delhi, officials say.
Stubble burning in Pakistan’s Punjab province has intensified this season, with farmers setting fire to leftover wheat and rice stalks after harvest.
The smoke and particulate matter are drifting across the border, exacerbating Delhi’s already critical air quality and pushing pollution levels into hazardous ranges.
Delhi’s pollution monitoring agencies have linked the spike in fine particulate matter to the transboundary haze, prompting calls for stronger cross‑border cooperation.
Environmental groups urge both governments to adopt cleaner post‑harvest practices and to coordinate monitoring to protect public health.
