A recent analysis reveals that 8.268 million bank accounts in Punjab hold roughly ₹3,111 crore, belonging to account‑holders who are either away or have forgotten their balances.
A survey of Punjab’s banking data shows that 8.268 million accounts are classified as dormant, collectively containing about ₹3,111 crore. The accounts are considered inactive because the rightful owners have not conducted any transactions for an extended period.
Bank officials say many of these account‑holders have migrated to other states or abroad, while others simply do not remember the existence of these deposits. Under existing banking regulations, funds in dormant accounts remain with the banks until the owners or their legal heirs file a claim.
The large sum of idle capital highlights the need for greater public awareness about dormant‑account procedures, enabling individuals to retrieve their savings and reduce the financial idle stock in the state’s banking system.
