A recent analysis shows that 14% of stroke patients in India are younger than 45, highlighting rising risk among the youth.
A new report cited by The Week reveals that roughly one in seven stroke patients in India are under 45 years of age, translating to about 14 per cent of all cases. The data, compiled from hospital records across the country, marks a sharp increase compared with previous decades when strokes were largely confined to older adults.
Experts attribute the trend to a combination of lifestyle and health factors. Rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity and sedentary habits among young professionals, coupled with high stress levels, are eroding the traditional age barrier for cerebrovascular disease.
Public health officials warn that early detection is crucial. They urge regular blood pressure checks, cholesterol monitoring and prompt medical attention for warning signs such as sudden weakness or speech difficulties, even in younger patients.
The findings have prompted calls for targeted awareness campaigns and preventive programs aimed at the youth, emphasizing lifestyle modification and routine health screenings to curb the growing burden of stroke in India.
