Odisha seeks CZA approval to retain rescued orangutans at Nandankanan Zoo

Bhubaneswar's Nandankanan Zoological Park has been housing two orangutans that were rescued from illegal captivity. The animals have been under the care of the zoo's wildlife team since their arrival, but their long‑term stay requires formal approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).\nThe CZA, the statutory body that regulates Indian zoos, must certify that the facility meets all standards for the species' welfare, nutrition and enclosure design before granting a permanent permit. Officials from the Odisha Forest Department have submitted the necessary documentation and are awaiting the authority's decision.\nIf the nod is received, the orangutans will remain at Nandankanan, allowing the zoo to continue its conservation and public‑education programs for the endangered great ape. The state has indicated that it will comply with any additional requirements stipulated by the CZA to ensure the animals' health and safety.
