The Odisha state government announced that all students studying in ninth and tenth grades will receive textbooks at no cost, as declared by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi.
Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced a new scheme that will supply free textbooks to every student enrolled in classes nine and ten across the state. The decision, unveiled during a live press briefing, aims to reduce the financial burden on families and improve access to quality education.
The textbooks, covering the state‑approved curriculum for both grades, will be distributed through existing school channels at the start of the academic year. Officials said the initiative will be funded from the state’s education budget and will be implemented by the Department of School and Mass Education.
Education officials expect the move to boost enrollment and retention rates, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas, where the cost of books often hinders continued schooling.
Parents have been urged to register their children through school administrations to receive the books, and the scheme will be closely monitored for timely delivery.
The government plans to review the program’s impact after the first year and may extend similar support to higher classes in the future.
