Meteorological officials say the northeast monsoon will arrive in Tamil Nadu today, bringing expected rainfall across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an advisory that the northeast monsoon is set to move over Tamil Nadu later today. The system, which typically arrives in early October, is expected to bring moderate to heavy showers across coastal districts and interior regions.
Forecasters anticipate that the monsoon will enhance humidity levels and trigger intermittent rainstorms, especially in Chennai, Madurai and the Nilgiri hills. While the rainfall is welcomed by farmers awaiting the post‑harvest season, authorities have urged residents to stay alert for sudden downpours and related water‑logging.
The IMD has also reminded commuters to exercise caution on highways and in low‑lying areas, where visibility can deteriorate quickly. Local administrations are on standby to deploy emergency response teams should any flood‑related incidents arise.
Overall, the onset of the northeast monsoon marks a seasonal shift that is crucial for replenishing water reservoirs and supporting agricultural activities in the southern peninsula.
