The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has launched a smart toll‑plaza cleanliness scheme that awards citizens ₹1,000 for photographing and reporting dirty or broken toilets at highway tolls.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced a new "Smart Toll Plaza Cleanliness" initiative aimed at improving sanitation facilities at highway toll plazas. Under the scheme, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will award a cash prize of ₹1,000 to any citizen who captures a photograph of a dirty or malfunctioning toilet at a toll plaza and uploads it through the designated platform.

The incentive is intended to encourage public participation in monitoring the condition of public amenities and to prompt quicker maintenance actions by authorities. Participants must submit clear images that clearly show the state of the toilet, along with the location details, to be eligible for the reward.

NHAI officials said the program will be rolled out across all national highways under its jurisdiction, with the expectation that increased reporting will lead to faster repairs and cleaner facilities for travelers. The scheme reflects the government's broader push for better hygiene standards on Indian roads.

The reward will be credited to the claimant after verification of the uploaded evidence. The ministry has not disclosed a deadline for the scheme, indicating that it will remain active as long as the cleanliness drive continues.
