The National Highways Authority of India, together with Karvir police, has started an anti‑encroachment operation along the Kolhapur‑Ratnagiri highway to clear illegal structures and restore road width.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Karvir police unit commenced a coordinated anti‑encroachment drive on the Kolhapur‑Ratnagiri highway on Monday. Officials said the operation targets illegal stalls, shopfronts and makeshift structures that have narrowed the carriageway and pose safety risks for commuters.
Teams from NHAI, supported by local police, are conducting on‑site inspections, issuing notices and, where necessary, removing encroachments under the provisions of the National Highways Act. The drive is part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow and reduce accident rates on this busy coastal corridor.
Authorities have warned that repeat offenders will face penalties, including fines and possible prosecution. The initiative is expected to be completed within a few weeks, after which the highway is slated for resurfacing and signage upgrades.
Local traders and residents have been asked to cooperate and relocate to designated commercial zones. The police have set up a grievance redressal cell to address concerns arising from the clearance.
