NH 66 snarls as Porvorim corridor stays closed during long weekend

The Porvorim corridor in Goa remains under restriction, causing severe congestion on National Highway 66 throughout the long weekend.

National Highway 66, the main arterial road linking Goa's coastal towns, experienced heavy gridlock over the recent long weekend as the Porvorim corridor remained under restriction. Motorists reported long queues of vehicles stretching for several kilometres, with travel times doubling compared to normal weekday conditions.

The restriction, imposed earlier this week for ongoing road works and safety checks, has limited the number of lanes available for through traffic. Local authorities have deployed traffic police at key junctions, but the volume of weekend travelers and commercial trucks has overwhelmed the limited capacity.

Commuters heading to popular beach destinations such as Candolim and Calangute expressed frustration, while some opted to take alternative routes via the inner Goa road network. Officials warned that the corridor may stay closed until the scheduled completion of the works, urging drivers to plan ahead and consider public transport where possible.

No major accidents were reported, and emergency services remained on standby throughout the period. The situation underscores the impact of infrastructure constraints on Goa's tourism-driven traffic during peak holiday periods.
