Radio New Zealand revisits the country's first reality television series, Flatmates, highlighting its role in shaping local TV entertainment.
Radio New Zealand (RNZ) has recently reflected on Flatmates, the nation's inaugural reality television series. The programme, which brought everyday New Zealanders into the spotlight, marked a turning point in the country's broadcast landscape by introducing unscripted, participant‑driven content.
Flatmates set a precedent for later reality formats, demonstrating that local audiences were eager for authentic, relatable stories. Its modest production values and focus on ordinary lives resonated with viewers, laying groundwork for future homegrown shows.
RNZ's reminder underscores the cultural impact of Flatmates, reminding both older fans and newer generations of the series that opened doors for New Zealand's reality TV genre.
