Researchers have identified a previously unknown gecko, Cyrtodactylus dimensis, in the forests of Assam.
A team of herpetologists announced the discovery of a new gecko species, Cyrtodactylus dimensis, from the northeastern state of Assam. The finding was reported by the news outlet Vajiram & Ravi, citing the research publication.
The species belongs to the genus Cyrtodactylus, known for its bent‑toed geckos, and was located in a moist deciduous forest region of Assam. Morphological analysis showed distinct scalation and size that set it apart from other regional species.
Scientists say the discovery adds to the rich biodiversity of the Eastern Himalaya foothills and underscores the need for continued field surveys. Further genetic studies are planned to clarify its evolutionary relationships within the genus.
