Scientists have identified a previously unknown caecilian amphibian in the northern Western Ghats, a finding that elevates the area's standing as a biodiversity hotspot.

A team of herpetologists conducting field surveys in the northern stretch of the Western Ghats reported the discovery of a new caecilian species, an elusive, limbless amphibian that dwells in moist soil and leaf litter. The specimen was collected from a forested valley near the Maharashtra‑Karnataka border, and preliminary morphological analysis confirmed it does not match any described species.

Caecilians are considered bio‑indicators of healthy underground ecosystems. Adding a novel species to the regional inventory raises the known caecilian count in the Western Ghats and reinforces the area's classification as a biodiversity hotspot under international conservation criteria.
