The North Eastern Council secretary said that inadequate infrastructure and lack of value‑addition processes are hampering the commercial viability of coffee grown in Nagaland.
The North Eastern Council (NEC) secretary highlighted during a recent statement that coffee cultivation in Nagaland, though promising, faces significant challenges due to insufficient infrastructure such as processing units, storage facilities and reliable transport links.
He emphasized that without systematic value‑addition—like roasting, grading, and branding—the beans fetch low prices in national and international markets, limiting farmers' earnings and discouraging investment.
The official urged both state authorities and central agencies to prioritize the development of coffee processing parks, improve road connectivity to farms, and facilitate training programs that enable growers to adopt quality‑enhancing techniques.
If these measures are implemented, the secretary projected that Nagaland could position itself as a notable coffee‑producing region, contributing to the broader goal of diversifying the North East’s agricultural exports.
