Navigational Challenges at Meghalaya Ports Halt Limestone Imports

Poor navigability of waterways in Meghalaya has forced a suspension of limestone imports, affecting industries reliant on the mineral.

The flow of limestone from Meghalaya to downstream industrial hubs has been abruptly stopped after authorities reported that the state's waterways are no longer navigable for bulk carriers. The mineral, traditionally transported via river barges, is a key input for cement, steel and other manufacturing sectors across the country.

Officials attribute the navigational breakdown to extensive silt buildup and reduced water depth following an unusually dry season. The combination of sedimentation and low river levels has rendered the usual transport routes unsafe for large vessels, prompting a temporary halt to shipments.

The suspension is expected to tighten supply chains for firms that depend on Meghalaya limestone, potentially driving up raw material costs and prompting manufacturers to seek alternative sources. Industry bodies have warned that prolonged disruptions could affect project timelines in the construction and infrastructure sectors.

State agencies have announced plans to commence dredging operations and explore rail or road alternatives to restore the flow of limestone. However, experts caution that full restoration may take weeks, leaving businesses to manage short‑term shortages.
