Nagaland has lost 795 square kilometres of forest cover over the past decade, a decline that threatens biodiversity and local livelihoods. State officials attribute the loss to logging, agriculture and infrastructure expansion.

In the past decade, Nagaland has seen a loss of 795 square kilometres of forest cover, according to recent data released by the state forest department.

The reduction, which averages about 79.5 km² per year, reflects ongoing deforestation driven by logging, agricultural expansion and infrastructure development.

State officials say the loss threatens biodiversity, water resources and the livelihoods of indigenous communities who depend on forest ecosystems.

The government has pledged to implement stricter enforcement of forest protection laws and to promote afforestation projects to offset the decline.
