The Nagaland government has launched a 60‑day tobacco‑control drive, rolling it out across all districts to curb smoking and chewing tobacco use.

The state health department announced the start of a two‑month tobacco‑control operation that will be implemented in every district of Nagaland. The programme aims to reduce the prevalence of smoking and smokeless tobacco through a combination of public awareness drives, stricter enforcement of existing bans, and community‑level monitoring.

Health officials will deploy teams of volunteers and frontline workers to conduct street‑level checks, display anti‑tobacco signage, and distribute educational material in schools and public spaces. The rollout also includes surprise inspections of vendors to ensure compliance with the ban on sales to minors.

The initiative comes amid rising concerns over tobacco‑related illnesses in the state, with recent health surveys indicating a steady increase in lung and oral cancers. Authorities have pledged regular progress reviews and intend to extend successful measures beyond the initial 60‑day period.
