The Mumbai CBI court has acquitted gangster Chhota Rajan, a Pune builder and three others in a case involving a 2009 attempt to murder a senior police officer.

The Mumbai Central Criminal Court, under the Central Bureau of Investigation, delivered a verdict on Tuesday that absolved gangster Chhota Rajan, a Pune-based builder and three co‑accused from charges related to a 2009 attempt to murder a senior police officer.

The court found insufficient evidence to sustain the prosecution’s case and ruled that the accused were not guilty of the alleged offence. The decision follows a lengthy trial that began in 2015.

Chhota Rajan, once a key figure in Mumbai’s underworld, had been on the run for years before being arrested in 2015. The acquittal marks a significant turn in the case, which had drawn widespread media attention.

Lawyers for the prosecution expressed disappointment, citing the lack of concrete proof. The court’s judgment is expected to be reviewed by the Bombay High Court.

The ruling is likely to influence ongoing investigations into organized crime in Maharashtra.
