Heavy rains have inundated 31 districts of Uttar Pradesh, with about 14,000 residents in Chitrakoot cut off and thousands evacuated across the state.
The southwest monsoon intensified on Tuesday, sending torrential rain across 31 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Water levels rose rapidly in low‑lying areas, prompting local administrations to declare emergency alerts and mobilise rescue teams.
In Chitrakoot district, the surge was particularly severe. Roughly 14,000 inhabitants found themselves stranded as roads and bridges were submerged, and authorities launched boat and helicopter operations to evacuate families to safer locations.
Statewide, the disaster management cell coordinated the evacuation of several thousand more residents from vulnerable villages in districts such as Satna, Banda and Mahoba. Police, the National Disaster Response Force and the army were deployed to assist with relief distribution and to restore connectivity.
Officials warned that the monsoon is expected to persist through the week, urging citizens to stay indoors, avoid flood‑prone zones and follow instructions from local officials.
