The Mizoram government announced that the upcoming state census will count refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh along with internally displaced persons from Manipur, a first for the state.
Mizoram's administration has confirmed that its next census will incorporate refugees from neighboring Myanmar and Bangladesh as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing conflict in Manipur. The decision, disclosed by the state’s census department, aims to capture a more accurate demographic picture and to facilitate targeted welfare measures for these vulnerable groups.
Officials said the inclusion will be carried out in coordination with the central government and relevant international agencies to ensure that data collection adheres to legal and humanitarian standards. The move reflects growing concerns over the rising number of displaced populations seeking shelter in the northeastern state.
By counting these groups, Mizoram hopes to better allocate resources, plan rehabilitation programs, and address security and health challenges that accompany large refugee and IDP settlements. The census schedule and detailed methodology are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
