The Mira‑Bhayandar Municipal Corporation will reduce water allocation by 10% and impose weekly supply shutdowns as the state grapples with a severe water shortage.

Maharashtra’s ongoing water shortage has prompted the state’s water department to order curbs in several municipal areas. Mira‑Bhayandar, a twin‑city on the outskirts of Mumbai, is among the first to feel the impact, with officials announcing a 10 percent reduction in the volume of water allotted to the corporation.

The cut will be implemented alongside a schedule of weekly supply shutdowns, intended to stretch existing reserves until monsoon rains arrive. Residents have been advised to conserve water and limit non‑essential usage during the shutdown periods, which are expected to begin within the next few days.

Local authorities said the measures are temporary but necessary to prevent a total depletion of reservoirs that have fallen to critically low levels. The corporation will monitor consumption closely and may adjust the schedule if the water situation improves or worsens.

The decision underscores the broader strain on Maharashtra’s water infrastructure, where several districts are already facing rationing. Experts warn that without significant rainfall, similar restrictions could spread to other suburbs around Mumbai in the coming weeks.
