A minor girl was gang‑raped while riding a moving bus, raising questions about the adequacy of current rape laws.
Police in India reported that a minor girl was gang‑raped on a moving bus. The assault occurred after the bus had started its route, with several male passengers allegedly involved.
The incident has sparked debate over the adequacy of the country’s rape laws, particularly after the 2013 amendments that expanded definitions and increased penalties.
Authorities have arrested suspects and are conducting an investigation under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Forensic evidence is being collected.
Civil society groups and lawmakers have condemned the assault and urged stricter enforcement of existing laws to protect children in public transport.
