The Meghalaya government announced plans to construct a permanent site for the annual Me’gong Festival in East Garo Hills.
The state government of Meghalaya has approved a proposal to develop a dedicated permanent venue for the Me’gong Festival in the East Garo Hills district, according to a statement from the Department of Culture and Tourism.
The Me’gong Festival, celebrated by the Garo community to mark the harvest season, attracts thousands of participants and tourists each year. Officials said a fixed infrastructure will provide better facilities, improve crowd management and boost the local economy.
The planned site will feature an open‑air stage, exhibition pavilions, sanitation facilities and parking areas. Funding will come from the state’s cultural‑development budget, with construction expected to begin later this year.
Local leaders welcomed the move, noting that a permanent venue will help preserve Garo cultural heritage while creating employment opportunities for residents of East Garo Hills.
