The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly speaker has not yet officially recognized the reported merger of eight United Democratic Party legislators with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has so far refrained from formally acknowledging the announced switch of eight legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The eight MLAs, elected on a UDP ticket in the last state election, have publicly stated their intention to join the BJP, but the procedural step of recognition remains pending.

Recognition by the speaker is essential for the legislators to be counted as members of their new party in the assembly's official records. Until that step is taken, the BJP cannot claim the additional seats in any calculations of its legislative strength or in matters such as quorum and committee composition.

The delay has drawn attention from political observers who note that the timing could influence upcoming confidence motions and the balance of power in the 60‑member house. While the speaker has not offered a reason for the hold‑up, procedural guidelines require verification of the merger and compliance with anti‑defection provisions before a formal acknowledgment is issued.

Both the UDP and BJP have lodged statements with the assembly, asserting that the merger reflects a strategic realignment ahead of future electoral contests. The speaker’s eventual decision will determine whether the eight legislators are officially recorded as BJP members, altering the party’s numerical presence in the state legislature.
