The Meghalaya government has submitted a proposal called “Mission 1000 Days” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aiming to reduce childhood stunting in the state.
Meghalaya’s health department presented a new initiative, dubbed “Mission 1000 Days,” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a recent meeting. The programme targets the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, a critical window for nutrition and growth, and seeks to bring down the high rates of stunting observed in the state.
According to the proposal, the mission will combine nutrition supplementation, maternal health monitoring, and community awareness campaigns. Officials highlighted that stunting remains a persistent challenge in Meghalaya, affecting long‑term health and educational outcomes for children.
The state hopes the central government’s support will enable scaling of interventions, allocation of funds, and integration with existing national nutrition schemes. If approved, the plan could serve as a model for other northeastern states facing similar health concerns.
Meghalaya’s chief minister reiterated the commitment to child health, urging swift action from the Union government to ensure that every child receives adequate nutrition during the formative early years.
The proposal is expected to be reviewed by the Prime Minister’s Office, with further details to be shared pending approval.
